Going to the dogs

英语很多和动物有关的短语用的都是比如狗啊、猪啊一类家养动物。

比如: a dog‘s breakfast, 狗的早餐，是比喻乱成一团糟，很差劲，没有条理。

例如：I tried to read his assignment but it was a dog’s breakfast. I couldn’t understand a word.

我在读他的作业，可是他写的一团糟，我一个字也没看懂。

另外一个常用语”goes to the dogs“?指事情比原来更糟糕。

This place is going to the dogs。

这个地方越来越糟糕了。

Sleeping dogs

我们再说两个和狗相关的英语短语。

let sleeping dog lie (让睡着的狗继续躺着)的意思是不要去自找麻烦，多一事不如少一事。

比如：I wanted to confront her about what she’d said, but in the end I decided it was best to let sleeping dogs lie.

我本来想跟她当面对质她说的话，但后来我还是决定最好的处理方法还是算了，就让这件事自己过去。

every dog has its day?---意思是每个人都有成功的机会，即使那些平时最不起眼的人。

比如：I didn‘t expect him to get the job, but I guess every dog has its day.

Let the cat out of the bag

英语中和猫有关的词汇也很多。

如果你看上去像”something the cat dragged i治疗羊羔疯方式有哪些n“(给猫拖进来的）,?那意思就是说你看上去很糟糕，比如很邋遢，很脏。

比如：What happened to you last night? You look like something the cat dragged in.

你昨天晚上怎么了？当时你看上去像邋遢。

there’s not enough room to swing a cat--没有足够的地方让猫荡秋千，用来比喻一个地方很小。

比如：My new office is tiny, there’s not enough room to swing a cat。

我的新办公室小极了，还不够让猫荡秋千的。

如果你让猫从袋子里跑出来了--let the cat out of the bag，那意思就是你说出了一个秘密或是让人吃惊的事。

Ants in your pants

英语中有?ants in your pants?，是比喻一个人，尤其是孩子，因为激动或是紧张等而动来动去，无法静止下来。

而中文中的”交际花“ 在英文里是用蝴蝶来比喻的--A social butterfly,不过?没有贬义的意思，只是说这个人性格外向，喜欢和人交流。

另外，英语中有一个很奇怪的短语--bee‘s knees--蜜蜂的膝盖，是用来说一件事或一个人很棒的。

比如：Everyone seems to think this movie is the bee‘s knees, but I’m not so sure。

每个人都说这部电影很棒，但我不觉得。

Playing possum

豚鼠（guinea pig）在英文中用来比喻试验品。比如你在学做一种新式菜肴，和请来吃饭的朋友开玩笑说：

"You’re my guinea pig. It‘s my first time cooking this dish."

负鼠possum是澳大利亚一种特有的动物。Play possum意思是“装死”或者“装睡着”，因为这是负鼠遇到袭击的一个御敌方式。

Dodo是古代的一种巨鸟，中文翻译是渡渡鸟，在17世纪就已经绝种了。因此说“dead as dodo"意思就是确实是死了，毫无疑问是死了，或是人、动物、事物，也可以指一种想法，一个思想等。

同时，”dead as a dodo"也可以指非常古旧的，不合时宜的。

比如：Her hopes of being elected are dead as a dodo after that terrible speech.

在做了那个糟糕透顶的演讲之后，他被选上的机会根本没有了。
